What is the main use of PrEP?

The main use of PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is to prevent HIV infection in individuals who are at high risk of contracting the virus. PrEP involves the daily use of antiretroviral medication to significantly reduce the chances of acquiring HIV through sexual intercourse or sharing injection drug equipment. When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to be highly effective, reducing the risk of HIV infection by up to 99% in high-risk populations.

While treatment for HIV-positive patients is critical, that falls within the realm of antiretroviral therapy (ART), which is used to manage and control the virus after infection has occurred. Mental health support and enhancing viral load suppression are important aspects of comprehensive health care but are not the primary use of PrEP. The focus of this preventive strategy is on avoiding infection before it happens, thereby protecting those who may be vulnerable.
